North Bend put the finishing touch on a perfect 4A Far West League boy's basketball season Friday night with a solid win over second place South Umpqua (7-3, 16-7) 70-25. The Bulldogs (10-0, 21-2) got 20-points from junior Hamilton Mateski, while sophomore Hayden Davisson added 14. North Bend has won 17 in a row. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 6 in the OSAA Power Rankings, last lost on Dec. 13 at Newport. The North Bend girls (2-8, 6-17) also beat the Lancers, 50-29 to finish tied for fourth with South Umpqua (2-8, 5-19). Sutherlin (10-0, 24-0) won the league title, while Brookings-Harbor (6-4, 15-7) was second. North Bend's boys will host the No. 4 team from the Skyline Conference, most likely Klamath Union (12-15), on Friday, Feb. 24.

Marshfield won its third game in a row in downing visiting Springfield 71-54 in the Pirates final regular season boy's game Friday night in the Pirate Palace at Coos Bay. Marshfield (15-8, 7-3) finished in second place in the 5A Midwestern League for the second straight year. The Pirates, who didn't lose at home this season to any of the other MWL's teams, were led by seniors Colton Thurman and Dalton Milburn with 21 and 20-points respectively. Senior Ty Cutting also contributed 11, while Derek Duenas scored eight (including two 3's), Zach Thrall had 5, Matt Woods 4 and Brandon Ball 2. The game was tight throughout the first half. Marshfield led by one after the first period (13-12), but Springfield outscored the Pirates 17-15 in the second to take a 29-28 lead into the locker room at the half. Marshfield exploded in the third with 23-points, while the Millers put up 12 giving the Pirates a ten-point advantage entering the final eight minutes. Junior Dylan Piquette, held scoreless in the first and finally got in the scorebook late in the second with a couple of free throws, hit a three with time running out in the first half. That set his tone for the second half. He ripped off five more three's to finish with 20-points for Springfield. The Millers won the JV game 47-30. Marshfield will host a home play-in game on Saturday, Feb. 25, possibly against Ashland (10-13). However, the Grizzlies, with an OSAA 5A Power Ranking at No. 23, still has one more game left at Eagle Pt. Tuesday, Feb. 21, which could change their power ranking before they are froze on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

A make up 5A Midwestern League girl's basketball game with visiting Springfield Saturday at Marshfield was won by the Millers 77-26. The Lady Pirates finished the regular season with an 8-15 record overall, 2-8 in the MWL. Marshfield is ranked No. 23 in the OSAA 5A Power Rankings and will have a play-in game on the road Friday, Feb. 24, most likely at West Albany.

North Bend senior Kevin Waller, headed to Wyoming on a scholarship this fall, capped his prep career Saturday at the OSAA State Championships at Mt. Hood CC with another title in the 500 Freestyle (4:40.16). He was also second in the 200 Freestyle (1:42.98). The Bulldogs won the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:23.75) as North Bend earned a trophy with a fourth place team trophy. The Lady Bulldogs matched that with a fourth place finish. Freshman Alyssa Bennett was first in the 200 Freestyle (1:58.41), while junior Kelsey Morgan took the 100 Breaststroke (1:11.66). Bennett was also second in the 500 Freestyle (5:20.71) and North Bend was third in the 200 Medley Relay (2:00.89). Marshfield sophomore Shaylyn Brownell was fourth in the 100 Breaststroke (1:10.19) and the Lady Pirates finished fourth in the 200 Medley Relay (1:58.80). Marshfield finished 10th in the team race.

North Bend will send seven wrestlers to the 4A state championships this weekend in Portland following regional competition at Hidden Valley near Grants Pass Saturday. Skyler Midcap was fourth at 106 to qualify.
