The younger sister of Oregon State's starting quarterback Sean Mannion, Katie Mannion, was nearly a one person wrecking crew against Marshfield Thursday during a 5A state softball play-in game at Silverton.  The senior pitcher faced 16 Lady Pirate batters struck out 10, walked one and threw a no-hitter as the Foxes downed Marshfield 10-0 in a five-inning game to advance to the bracket round of 16 next Wednesday.  Silverton, a quarter-final team of a year ago improved to 19-8, but have won 18 of their last 19 games.  The Foxes bats rocked Lady Pirate pitcher Breanne Johnson for 11 hits, including a solo home run by Mannion in the fourth.  Johnson recorded two strike outs and walked four.  Silverton scored three runs in the first, four in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.  Marshfield ends the season with a 15-11 record.

Marshfield's doubles team of Heidi Boesl and Katie Boesl fell 6-1, 6-3 to No. 1 seed Sarah Hawman and Emily Stocker at the OSAA State 5A Girl's Tennis Tournament in Portland Thursday.  The sisters drop into the consolation bracket and will play Kelsey Collis and Kacie Evans of Summit today.

North Bend's Zenora Burris fell 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 to Andrea Navarrete of Ontario, at the OSAA State 4A Girl's Tennis Tournament in Eugene Thursday.  The Bulldogs Kylee Woodman plays No. 3 seed Kate Rubinstien of Catlin Gable today in a first round match.  North Bend's double team of Taylor Cuzzort and Quinlyn Demining face No. 2 seed Any Delong and Jessi Fife of Vale in a first round match today as well.  In the boy's tournament, Kevin Johnson and Nathan Petrie open against Greg Papineau and Josh Lambert of Griswold, and in singles play, Keaton Baker takes on Martin Rubio of Umatilla.]

The Marshfield Booster Club meets today, 11:45 a.m., at Abby's Pizza in Coos Bay.  Pirate track coach Mac McIntosh will be the guest speaker and talk about the 5A Midwestern League District Meet's first day on Wednesday.

After the first day of the 5A Midwestern League District Track Meet at Silke Field in Springfield Wednesday, Marshfield leads both the boys' and girls' team races.  The Lady Pirates tallied 53 points to lead Springfield by five points, while the Marshfield boys totaled 66, to lead Marist by nine.  The last day of the two-day meet is Friday.  The Lady Pirates crowned two individual champions.  Kirby Neale won the Discus (112-09), while Lauren McGowne won the Long Jump (17-05.25).  On the boy's side, Dalton Milburn took the Discus (164-04), and Chase Messerle and Paul Harlow went 1-2 in the Pole Vault (13-06).  Sophomore Shaylyn Crook qualified for state by placing second in the 3,000 (11:01.74).  Colton Thurman also advances to state with a second place finish in the High Jump (6-04).

Marshfield's softball team travels to Silverton today to face the Foxes in a 5A Play-In game.  KMHS AM 1420 will carry the 4:30 p.m. game live.  It is also streamed on the radio station's website around the world.

North Bend has seven athletes at the 4A/3A/2A/1A OSAA State Tennis Tournament at the University of Oregon in Eugene.  Most will play on Friday, May 18; however, Zenora Burris will have a play-in match today against Andrea Navarrete of Ontario.

In a final tune up prior to the state softball play-in round, 5A Marshfield downed visiting 4A Siuslaw of Florence 13-0 in a five inning game Tuesday at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay.  Junior Breanne Johnson threw a no-hitter through four innings at the Lady Viks (11-12), and struck out four.  Lindsay Henson came on in relief in the fifth and gave up one hit, while striking out one.  The Lady Pirates (15-10) had 15 hits during the game, while scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second and six more in the third.  Senior Kara Young was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, junior Chelsea Pettet had three RBIs, and sophomore Abby Osborne and freshman Katelyn Rossback each had two RBIs.  Marshfield plays at Silverton Thursday, 4:30 p.m., in a 5A play-in game, while Siuslaw travels to Klamath Falls to play Henley in a 4A matchup Friday.

Marshfield finished 8th (841) at the 5A OSAA Girl's State Golf Championships at Trysting Tree near Corvallis Tuesday.  Summit, of Bend, won the state championship over rival Bend 671-699.  Marist, of Eugene, was third (720).  Senior Taylor McNamee led the Lady Pirates with a 28th place finish (97-96, 193).  She was followed by junior Brittany Banks, T39 (101-106, 207), junior Natalie Fleck T49 (116-102, 218), junior Shannon Kearns 56 (116-116, 232), and senior Rachelle Johnson, T58 (127-107).  Freshman Madison Odiorne, of Summit, was the individual medalist with a two-day total of 151.

North Bend finished fourth (675) at the 4A OSAA Boy's State Golf Championships at Quail Valley Golf Course near Banks Tuesday.  LaGrande won the championsip with a 637, followed by North Valley (650), and LaSalle Prep (660).  The Bulldogs were led by senior James Kirkpatrick's third place finish (78-73, 151.  He was followed by senior Logan Lucero 22 (82-86, 168), senior Jordan Tiller 30 (89-85, 174), senior Jantzen Moeller T49 (92-90, 182), and sophomore Eddie Metcalf 81 (116-110, 226).  Ryan Meinychuk of North Valley was the individual medalist (67-73, 140).

Marshfield's track teams are at the 5A Midwestern League District Track & Field Meet at Silke Field in Springfield today.  Some finals will be held, but the majority will take place on Friday.

With the 5A OSAA softball play-in round play-in round coming up Thursday, May 17, at Silverton, 4:30 p.m., Marshfield will utilize an opening in the amount of games allowed in a season to host Siuslaw, of Florence, in a practice game Tuesday, 5 p.m., at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay.

Four Marshfield softball players were named to the Midwestern League's First Team All League in voting by the coaches following the conclusion of the regular season.  According to Lady Pirate coach Floyd Montiel they include:  senior Kara Young, catcher; junior Alicia Hatzel, outfield; junior Breanne Johnson, pitcher; junior Chelsea Pettett, infield.  Second Team:  sophomore Abby Osborne, infield; Honorable Mention:  freshman Katelyn Rossback, infield; junior Mackenzie Vick, utility.

Three Marshfield baseball players were named Honorable Mention All Midwestern League in voting by the coaches following the end of the regular season.  According to Pirate coach Quintin Hall, freshman Andrew Sharp was named, Utility Player, junior Doug Molzahn, Hitter, and sophomore Drew James, Outfielder.

On the first day of the 5A OSAA Girls' Golf State Championships at Trysting Tree in Corvallis Monday, Marshfield's Taylor McNamee was tied for 25th with an 18-hole total of 97.  The senior was followed by junior Brittany Banks, tied for 32nd with a 101, junior Nancy Fleck tied for 56th with a 116, junior Shannon Kearns, tied for 56th, with a 116, and senior Rachelle Johnson 63rd with a 127.  The Lady Pirates are ninth with a 430.  Summit, of Bend, leads with a 340.

North Bend boys stand in fourth place at the 4A OSAA State Golf Championships at Quail Valley Golf Course, Banks on Monday.  The Bulldogs, with a first day total of 341, trail La Grande (325), North Valley (325), and LaSalle (339).  North Bend is led by senior James Kirkpatrick, fourth, with an 18-hole round total of 78.  Senior Logan Lucero, tied for 14th with an 82.  Senior Jordan Tiller who shot an 89, is tied for 33rd along with senior Jordan Moeller.  Senior Jantzen Moeller tied for 44th with a 92, and sophomore Eddie Metcalf was 81st with a two round total of 116.

North Bend's girls' tennis team captured the district title last Friday, May 11.  Lady Bulldog players  Quinlynn Deming, Taylor Cuzzort, Kylee Woodman and Zenora Burris all qualifing for the state tournament this week.

North Bend beat Elmira 12-2 Monday, in six innings, at Elmira, in a final tune up leading into the 4A baseball playoffs this Friday at North Valley in Merlin near Grants Pass this Friday.

Marshfield Dance Team member Shannon Boatright made the University of Oregon Dance Team this past weekend in Eugene.  Coach Debbie Brown, " For those of you who have had Shannon in class and have worked to keep her focused on her studies, I thank you for helping to make sure she was academically eligible for this opportunity.  She has been working towards this for 4 years now and I am so excited for her.  Her love of dance and dedication to it earned her this position, but it also took great teachers to help her get what she wanted."

Marshfield's girls' golf team, which finished second to Marist at the 5A Midwestern League district golf championships, opens the state tournament today at Trysting Tree, near Corvallis.

OSAA Power Rankings
The Power Rankings for the Oregon Schools Activities Association (OSAA) baseball and softball teams froze Sunday night for 4A teams, and tonight for 5 A teams, setting up the play-in games for the 2012 playoffs this week.  Following this past weekend's games, North Bend's baseball team is ranked 20th in the 4A.  Marshfield's baseball team is ranked 35th out of 36 5A teams.  North Bend's softball team is ranked 39th out of 41 4A teams.  Marshfield's softball team is ranked 22nd among 5A teams.  The Bulldog baseball team and the Lady Pirate softball team will most likely have play-in games this week, but on the road.  If the rankings hold up, Marshfield (14-10) would play at Silverton (18-8) with the winner advancing to the 5A 16-team bracket.  As the 4A FWL No. 3 team, North Bend would travel to the Skyline's No. 2 team, North Valley (18-5).  The Knights beat North Bend 7-0 in a preseason game back on March 22 in Merlin, near Grants Pass.  Play-in games have to be completed by Saturday, May 19.

North Bend swept visiting Douglas 2-0, 13-8 in a 4A Far West League baseball doubleheader to end the regular season Friday at Clyde Allen Field in North Bend.  The Bulldogs (8-7, 13-10) finish third in league.  South Umpqua took first (11-4, 14-9), Siuslaw second (9-6, 15-7), and Brookings-Harbor fourth (6-9, 11-10).

Douglas swept visiting North Bend 11-2, 11-5, Friday in Winston in the final 4A Far West League softball doubleheader.  The Lady Bulldogs finish with a 0-15 FWL record, 3-17 overall.  Douglas won the league championship (12-3, 13-8), Sutherlin second (10-5, 14-8), and Brookings-Harbor third (9-6, 13-9).

Marshfield ended the 2012 prep baseball season with a 22-0 loss to 5A Midwestern League champion North Eugene Friday at Swede Johnson Stadium in Eugene.  The Pirates struggled with their pitching and used four pitchers in the five inning game.  Marshfield had one hit against the Highlanders, a double from junior Doug Molzahn.

Marshfield’s girls’ tennis duo of Heidi and Katie Boesl finished second at the 5A District Finals held Friday at the Eugene Tennis Club.  The sisters beat a Churchill team in the semi-final round 6-3, 6-0, but lost to No. 3 seed Marist in the finals 2-6, 2-6.  The Spartans had earlier surprised the No. 1 seed from Ashland.  Coach Aron Bosel says his daughters struggled with serving and that all games went to deuce, “but we could not convert.”  The Boesls qualify for the State 5A Tournament this week in Portland.

North Eugene wrapped up a perfect 10-0 5A Midwestern League softball season with a 4-1 win over Marshfield at Coos Head Field Thursday night in Coos Bay.  The Highlanders, trailing 1-0, got all four of their runs in the top of the fifth when eight Highlanders went to the plate and produced five hits while loading the bases against the Lady Pirates (5-5).  Marshfield senior Kara Young, playing in her final home game, was 2-for-3 with a double and scored the only Lady Pirate run, while junior Alicia Hatzel had a double.

For the third year in a row, North Bend's boys are district tennis champions.  North Bend took first in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A District 3 Tournament at the William J. Sweet Memorial Tennis Center in Coos Bay.  The Bulldogs' Kevin Johnson and Nathan Petrie were second in doubles, and Keaton Baker second in singles.  All three will now advance to the state tournament.

As strong winds continued to blow into Coos Head Field from the North Wednesday night, Marshfield blew up with a flurry of errors in an ill-fated fifth inning as visiting 6A Sheldon turned a 7-2 deficit into a 13-7 advantage with 11 runs.  It wasn't one Lady Pirate tagged with the miscues, but the entire infield had at least one error as 15 Irish batters went to the plate, got a hit, and ran the bases.  Marshfield got four back in the bottom of the sixth, but Sheldon reliever Anissa Chin struck out one, walked another and then got the final two Lady Pirate batters to ground out to end the Midwestern League Hybrid game at 14-11.  Senior Kara Young was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs to pace Marshfield at the plate.  Freshman Katelyn Rossback was 2-for-4 with a double and scored three times.  Junior Mackenzie Vick also had four hits and scored a run.  The Lady Pirates (14-9) end the regular season at home tonight by hosting 5A MWL champion North Eugene at 5 p.m. at Coos Head Field in Coos Bay.

Marshfield edged Willamette by five-strokes to advance to the girls' state golf championships Tuesday during the final day of the two-day 5A Midwestern League district golf championships at Tokatee Golf Course.  The state championships will be held at Trysting Tee near Corvallis beginning Monday.  Marist won the team championship with a 682.  Marshfield was next (820), followed by Willamette (825).

Marshfield swept Willamette in a coed 5A Midwestern League dual track meet in Eugene Tuesday.  The Pirate boys won 87-58 as seniors Colton Thurman and Dalton Milburn each won the three events.  Thurman took the 100, Long Jump and High Jump, while Milburn won the Shot Put, Discus and Javelin.  On the girl's side, Marshfield won 97-44.  Junior Kara Wood won both hurdle races.

Zach Barker was 2-for-4 at the plate in leading visiting North Bend to a 6-2 4A Far West League baseball win at Florence Tuesday.  Clayton Duryee also had two hits for the Bulldogs (6-7, 11-10), and Cody Anderson contributed an RBI and scored a run.  Siuslaw falls to 8-5, 14-6.

Visiting Siuslaw handed North Bend a 6-0 4A Far West League softball loss at the Oak Park Field Tuesday.  The Lady Bulldogs fall to 0-13 in league and 3-15 overall, while the Lady Viks improve to 7-6, 11-9.
