Beach cleanup
Through the Stop Oregon Litter & Vandalism (SOLV) program, two statewide beach cleanups are held each year with thousands of volunteers. However, a group of volunteers in Curry County are conducting their own cleanup to remove debris scattered along the South Coast following last year's earthquake and tsunami wave from Japan. Their first effort on Jan. 28 collected an estimated 1,500 lbs of trash in the Brookings area, and they're not done yet. What they found was lots of Styrofoam, fiberglass boat parts and even lawn furniture at Macklyn Cove. McVay Rock was the next target.
